Why would I be qualified to write this blog? I grew up in the very pleasant midwestern town of Brecksville, Ohio. My neighbors could have been the Norman Rockwell family. It certainly was a privileged life.
In America, the greatest privilege one can have regardless of race is the fact that we were born in this great country. In addition to that, the fact that I was raised by a two-parent, intact, loving family was crucial to my success. A well-rounded education was also vital. I fully understand that some start from a different place than others. Some have to work a little harder and for some, it might take a little longer, but in 2023, everyone has access to an education. Unfortunately, there are many who graduate with absolutely no knowledge of America’s foundational principles. Those principles that allowed people of all races and ethnicities to achieve if they desire it badly enough.
So why am I writing for this website? I believe at its core America is the least racist, multi-racial, and ethnic nation in the world. The simple truth that more blacks from around the world have willingly immigrated to this country than were brought here on slave ships is telling. Why would any black immigrant come to the USA to experience such oppressive racism if it was actually true? I fully understand that racism exists in this country.
However, what I see between the races in America is completely different than what is portrayed on television and other media. I personally don’t know any racists and would certainly not befriend any. I observe people of all races interacting on a daily basis. Those that I know, play with and work with, and those who I don’t know by name. I see people laughing together, working together, and socializing together. I see minorities in all positions of authority, economic positions, and career pursuits. I’ve had black teammates, co-workers, and friends and all I care about is their goodness and character.
What impresses me the most about the civil rights movement and the black struggle in America is that despite the brutal, oppressive, and evil treatment blacks have endured over the centuries, as a people, they have persisted and overcome. They have embraced the constitutional framework that our founders have given us and worked within it to practice their religion, build businesses, establish families, and grow strong. Most often they didn’t view themselves as victims. Blacks have persevered and made no excuses. Blacks have endured, achieved, and accomplished. They are a critical part of the American story; a vital part of the American fabric. I’m an American. The unity of this country is vital to our existence. Without it, we fail as a nation.
My interest in the Yocum African American History Association is that I’m tired of the so-called racial division in this country and the damage it causes. Think about what you see and experience every day in your life in “EveryTown, USA”. That is reality, not what is on your screens. Believe your own eyes, interactions, and experiences instead of what you are told are our race relations in this country.
Why am I writing this blog? I’m interested in American greatness. We can’t achieve this without all people. My fellow citizens need to be exposed to the unsung heroes that this website champions. I’d like to educate my countrymen as to why America is exceptional and why African-American contribution has made it so. To be educated about black progress serves ALL Americans.
