Have you heard of Skyhook Foundation or Camp Skyhook?
Kareem Abdul-Jabbar is “giving kids a shot that cannot be blocked.” The outstanding NBA athlete had an idea to establish the Skyhook Foundation to give fourth—and fifth-graders a chance to experience nature and study it in an educational environment in the Angeles National Forest.
When Kareem was growing up, the outdoors was hard concrete, crowded parks, and the smell of car exhaust. He wanted the next generation to experience nature and study science in the fresh air at a science camp where you could see the stars. He partnered with Los Angeles Unified School District and created something different than a regular classroom. Kareem believes involving children in science gives them a better education and future, making STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) more accessible.
It’s his way to get kids involved in science. His famous Skyhook NBA shot is the namesake for his Skyhook Foundation. Kareem’s love of science expands children’s imagination and allows the underserved children in Los Angeles to get interested in science and industry. Did you know that 92% of boys and 97% of girls lose interest in STEAM if not engaged by 5th grade? Knowing that 67% of new jobs are in computer science but only 11% of students graduate with computer science degrees, men, women and minorities must be encouraged to pursue fields in STEAM.
