YAAHA is excited to bring the characters, Harriet and Roxanne, to our audiences, as Talking History with Harriet & Roxanne.™ We have discovered that the versatile comic book format is limitless in its possibilities to tell the stories of blacks’ accomplishments in American history. Harriet & Roxanne is a fun and entertaining way to introduce younger learners to black history and is an excellent choice for reluctant readers.
The combination of Harriet and Roxanne’s dialog and other graphic elements with real photos and other materials tells the rich history of blacks in America. Although we have specifically created this for the elementary school level, it entertains adults with the additional text provided in the lessons. YAAHA encourages adults to share the lessons with their children for child-parent discussion and enjoyment. We recommend the curricula and lesson plans on www.YocumBlackHistory.org for further enrichment for parents and older children.
Children process print media differently than they do a film. Therefore, we are excited about the comic book format for teaching black history to young readers. The Talking History with Harriet & Roxanne™ is in the lesson plan section and easily identified with Harriet and Roxanne’s avatars. You will find them at https://www.yocumblackhistory.org/lesson-plans-content/.
